I (18F) live in a pretty small two-bedroom flat with my roommate (19F). We both moved in about 8-9 months ago and split rent/bills equally. We’re both students and agreed on some basic ground rules early on, stuff like cleaning schedules, quiet hours, and the big one: no overnight guests without letting the other person know.
I’m introverted, light sleeper, and I value my privacy. I made it clear from the start that I’m not comfortable with random people staying over. She agreed and said she felt the same.
So over the past couple months, she’s been seeing this new guy, and I started noticing his stuff around more and more. At first, he’d stay late (around midnight) but not sleep over. Then suddenly, he’s spending the night. The first time, I just let it go, the second time I brung it up and she just apologised and promised that it'd not happen again. (Spoiler: it did)
Last week, I came home after a pretty long shift at work to find her boyfriend in our kitchen, shirtless, making himself food. He had a towel in the bathroom, his toiletries next to mine, and even his gaming console plugged into the TV in the living room. When I asked how long he was staying, she just casually said that he was crashing here for a few days.
I was furious. I reminded her, again, that I didn’t agree to this. She just kept saying “he has nowhere else to go” and that I was “overreacting.”
So I told her if she couldn’t respect basic boundaries, I wasn’t going to keep living with her. She laughed, called me dramatic, and said she wasn’t going to “kick her boyfriend out for no reason.”
So I told her she had 2 weeks to find somewhere else to live.
Now she’s staying with him full-time and sending me passive-aggressive texts, telling people I “kicked her out for being in love” and that I’m “controlling”. A few of our mutual friends are taking her side, saying I could’ve just waited for them to sort things out. But I honestly think that I gave her so many chances and she just walked all over me. I feel like I might've overreacted but I set boundaries and they were continuously broken.
So, AITAH?
