I have this friend who lives too far away for me to see them in person. And we message each other regularly. We have been talking to each other for a long time. But no matter what I say, how many questions I ask or how open ended the questions are, they always respond with a two or three words response.When they reply with "Good" to me asking "How are you?" I have tried asking "Are you sure? If there's anything you need to talk about I'm here." That doesn't work. As someone with ADHD small talk is extremely draining and I do not like it at all. So recently I've started matching their energy. I give one or two or three words messages. When they ask "How are you?" I reply "good" and the conversation usually ends there. Or when they reply with "Good" I react with a thumbs up emoji. AITAH for no longer pouring energy into someone who clearly won't do the same back?
