I (17F) had a group lab project last Thursday with two classmates: another girl (17F) and a guy (16M). That day, I was having a really rough time emotionally. I had run out of my antidepressants two days prior and hadn’t been able to refill them yet, so I was having crying spells and couldn’t regulate my emotions at all. Instead of going to class, I went to the school counselor’s office that period to calm down.
I texted 17F (who I consider somewhat of a friend and often help out in class) and let her know what was going on and that I wouldn’t make it. She responded kindly, said she totally understood, and told me to take care of myself.
The next day, I apologized to both her and 16M for not being there. They both told me it was okay. The hands-on part of the lab was mostly done, but I helped with what I could, took notes, and we started working on our lab report. We split up the sections, and I finished both of mine during class. I even double-checked with 17F before leaving to make sure we were good—everything seemed fine.
Fast forward to Monday. We’re back in class to finish the lab report, and I’m doodling quietly since I’d already completed my sections and 16M had finished his too. 17F, who was still working on hers, looks at me and says, “Why aren’t you helping?”
I replied calmly, “I finished my parts on Friday.”
She then goes, “Well, you should still be helping,” and immediately turns to the teacher to say, “Hear that, Mr. [Teacher’s Name]? OP isn’t helping again.”
I was stunned. There wasn’t even anything left for me to do. She still had her own part to finish, and I wasn’t just sitting there refusing to work—I had done my share. 16M was also done and just chilling, but she didn’t call him out. Beforehand, the teacher had told everyone in the class that if a partner wasnt doing their job, they would be docked points. She was purposely trying to get more points docked from me.
To top it off, she looked at me with this snarky attitude and said something like, “Maybe you should come to class next time.”
For the record, I have a 98% in this class and don’t skip school randomly. I even talked to the teacher before and accepted that I’d lose a few points for missing the lab. That seemed fair to me. But her trying to throw me under the bus in front of the teacher just felt mean-spirited.
So… AITAH for missing the lab and not “helping” when I’d already finished my part?
