I'm a 22 year old college student living with my parents. My parents got into a huge fight recently where they were arguing and yelling. I was uninvolved at first, until my father threw a glass across the room and broke it. I told them, "if that happens again I'm calling the police." My mom stormed out of the house, and I quickly retreated back into my room. My father came after me and began questioning me.
He said "You know if you call the police they'll take me to jail, right? I did that because I was upset, your mom shouldn't have yelled at me." I ignored him.
He then said, "You're not even gonna ask me what's wrong? don't you care that I'm upset?" and I said "no, I'm not your therapist." This really hurt his feelings, and he took this to mean that I'm mad at him. he then told me that he was really hurt and that he needed someone to talk to, and he brought up how they (my parents) are always there for me when I need them. I ignored him again. He said "your brother isn't like this, if I told him I was upset he'd care." While that is a valid response, my brother moved out almost 2 years ago and hasn't had to put up with this situation happening almost every day like I have. My parents are having a lot of problems, but I just don't care anymore. I don't care if they're upset, honestly. But, I understand how cold that is. My parents let me live at home for free while I'm in college and support me financially to some degree. Am I just being selfish?
