So I (19F) moved out a few months ago after nonstop arguments with my mom and dad. They didn't like me going out too much, wearing "attention-seeking" clothes, or that I didn’t wanna go to college yet. It was suffocating, so I left.
I told them I was doing remote freelance work that pays well — which is half-true. I do work from home, and I am making decent money, but I never said exactly how. Figured what they don’t know won’t hurt them.
Everything was okay until last week when my cousin (21M) apparently saw me online and decided to snitch. He told his mom, who told my mom, and within hours I had missed calls, texts, and a full-blown breakdown waiting at my door. My mom was crying, yelling, asking if I “have no shame,” if I “wanted to be seen like this.”
My dad was mostly quiet, just stared at me and then asked, “So this is how you pay for everything?” I said yes. He looked… weirdly impressed? But didn’t say much more.
Now my mom says I’ve embarrassed the family, and that I should quit and come back home before I “ruin” myself. I told her I wasn’t quitting, and if she can’t accept it, that’s her problem.
She hasn’t spoken to me since. My cousin blocked me too.
I honestly don’t think I did anything wrong. I pay my own rent, bills, groceries. I mind my business. I’m not hurting anyone. But the way my whole family’s reacting makes me feel like some kind of monster.
Soooo.... AITAH?
