Hi guys! First time poster! For bg, I do community service mutual aid stuff in NYC, taking folks to food banks etc, moving goods for events I volunteer at. That said, I got a message request on Signal from someone I don’t know at all asking:
“hey villanelle, I wanted to ask: could you help a coworker of mine move with your car from E Bronx to manhattan Chinatown?.. she'd be moving in with me and she wouldn't be moving with any large furniture, just clothes and belongings and such. She could chip in like $20 for gas or something.”
To this I said:
“Meaning no offense, it’s just considering I don’t know who you are, I’m going to say no. I wouldn’t recommend anyone lend their car to a total stranger, esp to park and unload and drive back and forth in Manhattan. Not about the money, just a liability, trust thing.”
To this, they said:
“oh I wasn't saying to lend the car, rather just if you could help her with moving with you being the driver, helping unload and stuff.”
To this, I said:
“No problem. I’ve done that for a close friend before and it’s a total pain and plenty risky (got two tickets alone that day). Not my bag. If you want to raise some mover money, happy to chip in. LMK.”
To this, they said:
…absolutely nothing. Which kinda made me feel like an AH.
Am I one? Again, I don’t know them or the person in need of movers. I wish I didn’t feel like a people pleaser w guilt, but I do!
LMK.
