Yesterday a dog was posted on a local lost and found dog page. Immediately I noticed how she looked exactly like my dog. I read the comments of people saying to take her to the shelter to be scanned for microchips. I offered to adopt if there were no microchips. Now what I should have said was I’d be willing to adopt if you were going to leave her at the shelter. But another woman responded with: “Please don’t ask for a pet on here. This is a page for pets to be reunited with their owners, whether microchipped or not. Please go to the shelter where there are 100’s of beautiful dogs hoping for a home and not to be euthanized. If you can’t afford the shelter fee’s, then you certainly can’t afford to own a dog.” And I responded: “shelters can be a traumatic experience for dogs. If no one was to claim the dog then the person and or shelter can contact me. I’ve had people ask the same of me when I find lost dogs so they can have a home for certain and not risk euthanasia at a shelter. I was grateful. By all means if she is reunited that would be great. Also the last time I adopted from a local shelter she died 3 days later from parvo she contracted there & after I spent thousands trying to save her after knowing her for one day. I’m cautious of shelters & offered a solution in the worse case.”
Should I never offer again? Is it just not the place to offer? I truly was grateful knowing a home was open to the lost dogs I’ve found but someone else found it offensive. Probably many more do. Opinions?
