So, I (22M) had a golden retriever named Charlie for 14 years. He was my best friend, my emotional support animal through a rough childhood, and honestly more of a brother to me than my actual siblings. He died last year and I was devastated.
Fast forward—my sister (32F) is pregnant with her first child, a boy. At a family dinner, she announces the name: Charlie. I kind of laughed and said, “Wait, like... after my dog?” She said no, but she did admit that after hearing me talk about how special Charlie was, the name grew on her.
I told her it made me uncomfortable and felt kind of weird and disrespectful—like naming your kid after someone’s dead pet. She said I was being selfish and crazy, that it’s “just a name” and I don’t own it.
Our family is now split. My mom thinks I overreacted and should be happy she chose a name with “positive associations.” My dad is on my side and thinks it’s creepy.
I know it sounds dumb, but I just feel like it’s wrong. AITAH?
