My(30sF) coworker(20sF) “A” and I have both been at the same job for about three years. We work in an office setting that’s generally relaxed in terms of interpersonal interactions. Everyone else at the office has been there much longer, including BO Coworker (40sF) “BO”, who has been there at least 10+ years. She is an administrative assistant and myself and A are in more mid-level roles.
Over the last few months, I’ve noticed BO has started to smell frequently. Not everyday, but many days, and sometimes multiple days in a row. It’s enough that if I’m sitting at my desk and she is in my doorway, I can smell her. Today, I could smell her when I walked through her office (which is a thoroughfare to get to the copy room).
I’m beginning to get concerned because she hasn’t always had this issue. Today, I approached A behind closed doors and asked if she noticed if BO smells. She said she had noticed it for several months but she has not said anything to BO about it. Neither of us are sure what to do or if we should say anything. Some more factors:
• BO is a caregiver for an ambulatory disabled family member. Another close relative of hers recently became disabled too and now she is taking care of them also.
• BO recently lost a lot of weight while on a GLP-1.
• Management is not friendly. Neither me nor A trust BO’s direct manager for a variety of reasons unrelated to anything haven’t to do with BO. She is not our direct manager but highly influential in the job.
• One of the reasons I’m considering approaching BO is because I want her to know before someone else complains and her manager gets involved.
• There is a separate HR staffer but it’s unclear how she would handle this. She mostly handles onboarding and payroll in my experience.
• BO can be somewhat unpredictable. Generally she is easy to work with, she likes me and A, but we have both seen her be defensive to others when reasonable requests are made of her. We’ve seen her blow up and storm off a couple of times.
• I am leaving in the fall, so I am not worried about long term consequences for myself at this employer or with this individual.
• Smell varies. Sometimes it’s kinda a BO smell. Sometimes it’s kinda an unwashed feminine area smell. Sometimes it’s a poop smell.
TLDR; coworker smells and I’m not sure if we should say anything. So am I an asshole?
