I was helping my son with a project outside his home and his girlfriend lives there but didn’t want to help with the project. It was an all weekend project and I brought and paid for all the supplies to do the project ($800 plus food and drinks for the other people helping). Son’s girlfriend doesn’t put many hours in at her part time job so my son’s budget is tight because she doesn’t financially contribute. I’m not rich, and the expense was a big one for me. While doing the work, my husband and I smoke cigarettes and left a few butts in the grass around the house. It’s a project that left old peeling paint in the grass, but I planned on picking them all up when the work was done. I’m not talking about multiple packs of cigarettes, I had three that I put out in the dirt near each downspout so I knew exactly where they would be at pick up time. Girlfriend comes out to look at the work done on day 3 and tells my son “Do you think they could pick up their cigarette butts? I don’t think it’s an unreasonable request.” This infuriates me as the flower beds are stuffed full of last year’s dead leaves, she’s got a patio chair that sits outside all year growing mold, and I absolutely would have cleaned them up at the end of the work when I loaded up all of the supplies I brought. I’m new to the dealing with adult children’s partners thing but I need to know AITAH?
